U.S. Army Spc. Francisco Jimenez, an infantryman assigned to Personal Security Detail, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, fires a round from an M4 carbine during marksmanship sustainment training in Mosul, Iraq, Sept. 29, 2010. The M4 Carbine is one of the weapons to which the M855A1 5.56mm Enhanced Performance Round is tailored.

The Army has outlined the competition that will select the best new carbine — and one that ultimately will face off against the improved M4A1 in a battle to become your next weapon.

The overall schedule of competition, testing, production and fielding is approximately three years to first unit equipped.

As an infantry man the weapon should appropriate for the mission. Yes we need a round that has more “knock down” power but they dont need a rifle that is to bulky to clear rooms if need be. The 5.56 is a good round but when you have insurgents that are drugged out to the point where you have to put several into them, that is a cause for concern. I think that the 6.8 SPC would be a wise choice. The reason being is that they can still use the M16/M4 platform which means you dont have to spend countless dollars training troops how to clean and operate the weapon. The only down fall I can really see is that the magazine hold 25 rds compared to 30 with the 5.56. If you have to waste 25 rds to extingush the enemy, then you should not be in combat!!!

Use the M14 as a starting point, the garand action is easier to clear.there is no rule that says a battle rifle has to look like an M16.

When are they gonna learn? We need a 7.62X51 battle rifle with a TWENTY INCH BARREL OR LONGER!!!! Cut it out with these shorty barrels, not all combat is withing 100 yards.

  • Carbine….what about a BATTLE RIFLE..has this been solved? Is there a replacement for the it the SCAR?
