In 2008, Hornady Manufacturing Company expanded the rather short list of factory-loaded match ammo, which has limited police rifles to the .223, .308 and .300Win Mag chamberings with the introduction of the 6.5 Creedmoor, a cartridge designed for precision shooting at ranges out to 1000 yards. A handful of gunmakers saw the potential of this cartridge early on, including DPMS. That company’s new Panther 6.5 Creedmoor is the subject of this review.

Over the past decade or so, the 6.5mm bore won the favor of long-range competitive shooters in NRA high power, F-Class, and 1000-yard benchrest disciplines. For the most part, the wildcat 6.5mm-.284Win has been king of the hill, since it can propel high BC (ballistic coefficient) 139- to 142-grain bullets to 3000 fps (feet per second) out of 28- to 30-inch target barrels with accuracy on the order of 1/2-MOA (minute of angle) at 1000 yards.

    i dont understand why people are saying it is a typo. 1/2 MOA at 1000 yards is possible. all that is saying is that a 5 round group at 1000 yards is 5 inches or less. 1 MOA = 1.047 inches at 100 yards every hundred yard so 1.047x 10 = 10.47 inches. so at 1000 yards 1 MOA = 10.47 inches 1/2 of that is 5.235 inches so all they arer saying is that this rifle will hold a 5.235 inch group at 1000 yard. many rifles can do that it is not a typo. it may not be true but it is not at all impossible.

    0.5 MOA. Hmmmmm. If John Doe says it is a typo it must be true. I’ll just disregard my 9th grade algebra teacher, throw Cartesia geometry out the window, and ignore simple triangular positioning (the theory behind GPS systems worldwide).

    Otherwise, 0.5 MOA at 100yd would equal 0.5 MOA at 1000 yd, under ideal conditions of course(0.5 ” @ 100 translates to 5″ @ 1000). Or, maybe John Doe knows something mathematicians and ballisticians haven’t calculated yet.

    Hey folks, let me weigh in on this one.

    Short story even shorter, I was determined to buy a rifle one day and went out looking. Bought a rig that was by all appearances, tags and stickers a new rifle from the used rack–Savage M11 LRH in 6.5 CM, a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10 x 50 sitting on top. Had never heard of the cartridge but was well educated by a visit to the ammo.

    Got it home and then started researching what I’d just bought. Surely what I found was all hype, so many videos of M11 lightweight hunter models printing at 1 – 1.5 inches at 100yd w factory ammo!!

    Suffice to say I am extremely pleased with mine, first five 3-shot groups average 1.1 inches, two of them are .75 to .88 inches!!

    Those videos in in my estimation are not hype. MOA with a factory barrel and factory ammo is possible.

    And to clarify any confusion on what MOA is, 1.05 inches at 100yd, 2.1 at 200, 3.15 at 300,….. ~10 inches at 1000yd. But it’s easier to just drop off digits right of the decimal and say it is 1 inch for each 100 yards out to any distance.

    0.5 moa at 1,000 yards with a Nightforce scope and 6.5 CM Savage model 12 LRP = possible and repeatable.

    Until you go and shoot or watch a 1,000 yd rifle match where there are some of the top shooters in the nation. You just might learn something about long range target shooting.

    Not a typo…0.5moa = 5inches at 1000yds.(may not be exact but definitely close enough for gov. work!!)……unless my old feeble mind is failing me.
