ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq – The V-22 Osprey — half helicopter, half plane — has flown troops and equipment throughout Iraq for just over a year without a major incident.  However, critics are still skeptical of the aircraft designed to replace the military’s transport helicopters, stating that the Osprey lacks firepower for defensive use in heavy combat.  But pilots who fly the Osprey say it makes up for its shortcomings with its speed, enabling a pilot to fly the plane “like a bat out of hell” to safer altitudes far above the reach of small-arms fire.
