The operation that killed Osama bin Laden was designed to do just that, not to take him alive, a U.S. government official told CNN Monday.

DNA matching is under way on samples from the body of the slain terrorist leader, the official said. There are photographs of the body with a gunshot wound to the side of the head that shows an individual who is not unrecognizable as bin Laden, the official said.

No decision has yet been made on whether to release the photographs and if so, when and how.

The mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, U.S. officials said.

Here’s my take on this story. Gunshot to the side of the head makes this guy unrecognisable and DNA has to me used to identify the remains as Bin Laden. Lets say it takes a few days to do this. The second the story broke that he was killed, it would of gone viral. Every news agency in the world would be running it, days even weeks before the DNA testa have been run. I cannot believe for one minute, that if in fact the man that was killed was not Bin Laden and DNA tests confirm that its not. The US government would bury those findings, rather than lose face to the world. Sad reality.

We owe a debt of gratittude to the brave Navy SEAL Team that took out this monster. Alive, he would have been a problem, dead, problem solved.
