US Senator Charles Schumer traveled to Newburgh Wednesday afternoon to support city Police Chief Michael Ferrara in his effort to acquire surplus Department of Defense equipment that is desperately needed to beef up the department’s law enforcement capabilities.

Schumer noted the City of Newburgh has the highest violent crime rate per capita in the State of New York at 1,689 violent crimes per 100,000 people, which is three times that of New York City, and he said with only 79 police officers in their department, it is essential they be given top priority when it comes to receiving surplus military equipment from the DOD.
