The AR has evolved into a modular, cleaner-running, close-quarter carbine!

Some believe the AR-15 platform has three major drawbacks. First, it runs rather dirty with lots of carbon fouling. Second, the position of the charging handle is situated so that the shooter must remove the gun from his shoulder to operate the action. And finally, the stock will not fold for convenient transport or, in extreme situations, for CQB operations. Rock River Arms’ LAR-PDS (Piston Driven System) Carbine corrects each of these assumed shortcomings.

The AR-15 platform has been around for over 50 years and has sort of become the 1911 of fighting rifles. The list of accessories and modifications available for the platform is almost endless. Not only is it the most customizable rifle on the planet, but it’s also the one most easily customized by the end user. Recently, we’ve even seen a plethora of new cartridges designed especially for the AR in everything from .20 to .50 caliber. However, with the exception of piston-driven ARs, none of these cool modifications or cartridges addressed the three main complaints.

With the recoil spring assembly located above the barrel, the LAR-PDS is free to employ a side-folding/collapsing stock assembly.

For this reason, new weapon systems like the FN SCAR and Bushmaster ACR generated a lot of buzz in the combat rifle arena. The problem with both of these designs is that, while they tackled the most popular AR problems, they were not ARs; meaning, they were not compatible with the vast majority of AR-dedicated parts and accessories.

Nice design but just like the ACR they managed to mess this up with a 1/9 twist barrel. This is supposed to be a tactical carbine…whos gonna use light grain 5.56 for the bad guys??? What a loss.
