BAGHDAD – Three American soldiers were killed in a small-arms fire attack in northern Iraq, the U.S. military said on Wednesday in Hawija, a Sunni Arab town about 150 miles north of Baghdad.

The town was once a hub for Sunni militants and disaffected allies of Saddam Hussein but was thought to have been pacified in recent months.

Separately, in an area south of baghdad, a suicide truck bomber detonated his vehicle near the Baghdad home of an Iraqi police general, killing 16 people in the biggest attack on the capital in months.
