A Somali suspect accused of trying to hijack a U.S. vessel is scheduled to be in New York courtroom Tuesday.

Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse is accused of trying to hijack the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean in April 2009. He is also charged with in two additional hijackings.

Muse is expected to be present at a pretrial hearing Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET in a federal court in New York, according to court documents.

Muse faces charges including piracy; seizing a ship by force; kidnapping and hostage taking – along with charges of possessing a machine gun in the commission of other offenses. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

The Maersk Alabama was attacked about 350 miles off the Somali coast, authorities have previously said. Muse allegedly demanded that the ship be stopped, then he and others allegedly took a life boat and held the captain of the ship – Capt. Richard Phillips – hostage on it.
