American Samoa Police to be Armed with Guns

American Samoa police will start carrying Glock 17 handguns next year for the very first time.

American Samoa police will be armed for the first time after recently receiving a shipment of 24 Glock 17 handguns. The decision, which was strongly encouraged by police commissioner William Haleck, will go into effect next year. Haleck has warned of increasing drug-related gun violence, pointing to the shooting of a police officer outside the High Court a few years ago.

American Samoa is a group of islands in the South Pacific with a population of roughly 55,000. It is a U.S. territory.
