While law enforcement agencies across the country are being affected by budget cuts, “Big Data” is helping officers to prevent and solve crime without having to spend big money.

“Big Data” refers to the ability to search and analyze large amounts of data from numerous sources.  “Big Data” is able to search though everything from zoning applications for liquor sales to building permits to the grand opening dates of new retail stores to help law enforcement officials make connections and see patterns to help deter future crime and solve current cases.

Many companies are working to help further develop “Big Data” for law enforcement purposes, such as IBM.  James Lingerfelt, senior consultant with IBM’s Global Smarter Cities Team, said, “The emergence of Big Data has become the newest natural resource of law enforcement.  Big Data is helping police agencies all over the world make connections and detect patterns to prevent and solve crime.”
