Waterloo regional patrol officers now have access to a more powerful and accurate firearm to use in dangerous situations.

Last year, front-line officers used the military-style C8 carbine rifles in 11 separate situations, said Insp. Kevin Thaler.

Tactical officers, who have been equipped with the C8 for years, used the rifle 37 times in situations last year, according to the 2012 use-of-force report presented to the regional police board Wednesday.

Thaler said this assault rifle — the same type used by the Canadian Forces — is replacing the pistol as the gun of choice to use in high-risk arrests and in potential situations like the mass school shootings in the United States.
