A clandestine, elite Green Beret unit that operated for nearly 30 years during the Cold War is being honored with a memorial at Meadows Field Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg.

The Detachment A Berlin Brigade, which was comprised of roughly 90 Green Berets, was based in Berlin. The Green Berets wore civilian clothes and spoke fluent German, and were on high alert 24 hours a day. Their classified missions are still unknown to the general public.

In honor of their service, official with the US Army Special Operations Command descended on Meadows Field Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg to dedicate a memorial stone for the unit. The unit’s flag was also cased for the first time.

“No force of its size has contributed more to peace, stability and freedom,” Army Special Operations Command officials said.
