Officer Maria Thomas responded to a shots-fired call last Friday and found herself in the sights of an Orlando man waving a pistol at her, according to police reports.

Rather than try to shoot the man, Thomas took cover by racing her patrol car in reverse until she rammed a second patrol car coming to assist her on Patterson Avenue

She and Officer Debra Behrens jumped out of their damaged patrol cars, drew their guns and ordered Quinten Jackson to drop his weapon.

“The best tactical defense is often a tactical retreat,” said Officer Eric Clapsaddle, the department’s range master and senior shooting instructor. “We prefer not to be trapped inside a steel and glass coffin…It’s extremely difficult to shoot seated behind the steering wheel while wearing a vest and a holster.”
