West Reading Borough Council agreed Tuesday night to donate a short-barreled semi-automatic rifle to the Berks County Emergency Response Team.

The high-capacity 40-caliber weapon is used for clearing rooms in an urban environment, Police Chief Edward Fabriziani said.

The borough no longer has an officer qualified to use or instruct in the use of the weapon, he said, noting it had been purchased before the creation of the county SWAT team.

“It’s just sitting in the closet gathering dust,” Fabriziani said.

How is this a story? Great. SWAT team gets a gun. Is there even any indication as to what the platform in question might be?
