Eight city residents have been arrested in Operation Gravedigger, a five-month State Police investigation into illegal gun trafficking that focused on weapons sales near two funeral homes on Hamilton Avenue, State Police said yesterday.

The investigation by the State Police Weapons Trafficking Unit and the Trenton Police Department began in March and led to the seizure of 16 guns, including five assault rifles, and ammunition.

Undercover detectives or operatives working on Operation Gravedigger asked the sellers to meet on Hamilton Avenue near Columbus Park to sell the weapons, Lt. Stephen Jones, State Police spokesman, said.
