The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Indian Navy execute a joint exercise in the Indian Ocean off Chennai in southern India.

It is the second exercise of its kind since, and the first to be staged in India.

The focus of the exercise is on security in seal lanes and enhancing interoperability in antipiracy operations.

Given that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is slated to make an official visit to India at the end of January, the exercise is seen as aimed at checking China’s increasing assertiveness in regional waters.
