“It’s a very critical piece of equipment,” Police Chief Dale Watson said Monday. “It can mean the difference between life and death.”
The new vest was acquired through efforts of the group Friends of the Mount Airy Police Department. It was formed last year to help local officers acquire extra gear that wasn’t being supplied through normal budgetary channels.
“It’s a step up from what our regular patrol officers wear,” Watson added of the standard vests that cost about $600. Before the new one was received, the force had only one other of its type available.
