A firearms dealer from Chaparral, New Mexico will serve five years in federal prison after pleading guilty for his involvement in a gun-smuggling operation.

Ian Garland, 52, did business as Chaparral Guns while falsifying statements about the aqcuisition of firearms. He confessed to aiding and abetting the straw purchases of approximately 193 firearms.

Garland admitted he knew these weapons were illegally destined to people in Mexico. He is the third of 12 convicted defendants, which include former Village of Columbus (NM) Police Chief Angelo Vega, former Village of Columbus Trustee Blas Gutierrez, and former Village of Columbus mayor Eddie Espinoza, to be sentenced in this case. No other sentencing dates have been scheduled.
