The state processed a record number of gun permit applications last year.

The attorney general’s office said Monday it processed 12,801 applications in 2010, up 1.5 percent from the previous record high of 12,606 reached the year before.

Hawaii permit applications have nearly doubled since 2000, while the number of registered firearms has surged more than 130 percent.

Last year, the state rejected 134 applications, or 1 percent of the total, for various disqualifications. Most of the rejected applications were for longarm guns — or firearms with longer barrels.

Nearly 4 percent of applications last year were approved but subsequently voided after applicants failed to return for their permits within a specified time period.

The state approved the vast majority — 95 percent — of permits.
