Heckler & Koch Awarded $44.5M Army Sniper Rifle Contract

The US Army will replace its current M110 rifle from Knight’s Armament with the G28 precision rifle designed by Heckler & Koch.

The U.S. Army has selected Heckler & Koch’s G28 as the next sniper rifle for its troops.

In its search, the Army, according to the Program Executive Office, was looking for a “shorter, lights, more accurate, more ergonomic and more reliable Semi-Automatic Sniper System than the M110 with an improved day optic and suppressor.”

According to FedBizOpps.com, the order is for a total of 3,643 units at a total contract price of $44.5 million.

The U.S. Army Contracting Command – New Jersey, Picatinny Arsenal, NJ on behalf of the Project Manager Soldier Weapons awarded a single award Indefinite Delivery-Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with Firm Fixed Price (FFP) Delivery and Task Orders with two (2) options for a maximum total of 3,643 Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) units. The period of performance for the base ordering period will be Twenty-Four (24) months, during which time Production Qualification Testing/Operational Testing(PQT/OT) of 30 CSASS units will be conducted. The minimum ordering obligation for this contract is 30 CSASS units to be used for PQT/OT.

Guns.com has reported that of the two rifles available, the Army has chosen Heckler & Koch’s G28.

The Army selected the HK G28 rifle, a gas-operated 7.62mm rifle. It has a max length of 42.6 inches, 13.4 inches in height, a barrel length of 16.6 inches, and weighs 12.8 pounds.

Is that a Grip-pod AND a bipod? Why?

LMT MWS is the better rifle, with mags compatible to what is inventory already. How good were the hookers and coke that HK provided? Must have been some primo stuff.

Can LMT deliver enough product? Sometimes contracts get awarded not just on product does but the ability to fulfill contracts

What American weapons manufactures aren’t good enough? Just asking as American weapons seem to be falling by the wayside. Glock might be the new American soldier sidearm?

In all fairness to the Glock, it is the best choice available. That’s why so many LE agencies use it. In that case, it made sense. The HK rifle was inferior to the LMT MWS. Had to be some BS going on there.
