llinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has issued a letter instructing state police to release the names of authorized gun owners in Illinois to the press, the Associated Press is reporting. State police had initially denied the AP’s request for a list of Illinois residents with a Firearm Owners Identification card on the grounds that disclosing the names would violate the privacy of gun owners. The wire service explains that police officials have not indicated whether they will comply with Madigan’s ruling, and that there are currently Republican-sponsored bills in the Illinois House and Senate that would prohibit disclosing this kind of information.

The news comes less than two weeks after the New York Times obtained the names of more than 37,000 people licensed to own handguns in New York City from the New York Police Department after filing a Public Records Act request and a lawsuit. The police department handed over names and ZIP codes but left out street addresses, retired police officers, and city residents with licenses for long guns like shotguns and rifles.

O.K. so the State requires it’s citizens who desires to own a firearm be issued a Firearms Owner ID card, what I don’t understand is how is this a public record. No one has any business knowing what firearms I own: There appears to be some underlying intent to eventualy further firearms control from it’s citizens. Mind you I am a law enforcement officer and I beleive every law abiding citizen who desires to own a firearm has a right to without fear of losing it in the future due to some political or social insecurities.

This is a violation of the U.S. Constitution and she should be arrested, tried, convicted & incarcerated. This should be done in all states who commit this crime. Enough is enough and too much in nasty! We are NOT a democracy, we are a Constitutional Representative Republic. The Constitution is not a peice of paper, it is Sacred Law of the land! Anyone who thinks differently needs to be ejected from this country and barred from ever re-entering.

  • In Texas NO STATE LIST OF FIREARM OWNERS EXISTS NOR SHOULD IT. IT IS NO ONES BUSINESS TO KNOW WHAT GUNS A CITIZEN OWNS. ONLY IN A POLICE STATE LIKE IL, CA, NY, NJ,MINN, AND I AM SURE THERE MAY BE OTHERS CAN THIS TYPE OF TYRANNY EXIST. ARE THERE ANY CITIZENS THAT BELIEVE IN THE US CONSTITUTION ALIVE IN IL? HOW CAN FREE MEN ALLOW THIS TYPE OF OPPRESSION TO EXIST IN THE UNITED STATES?

A FOID is a card required for Illinois residents to own a firearm, purchase a firearm, or ammo. It allows the state to register (potential) gun owners.
