In an effort to promote gun safety in the wake of the accidental shooting death of a 9-year-old Lexington boy, the Lexington Police Department will give away free gun locks.

The police department, in conjunction with Project ChildSafe, will make free gun locks available to any firearm owner beginning Monday, April 26. Residents can pick up the free cable style locks Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Division of Police Headquarters, 150 E. Main St.

Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program used to promote the safe handling and storage of firearms for all gun owners through safety education messages and free gun locking devices.
