Marion County Sheriff John Layton is distributing 2,500 safety devices in an effort to help gun owners ensure that their firearms do not fall into the hands of children.

Layton is joining with Don’s Guns and Galleries and Beech Grove Firearms Inc. to deliver the gun locks for free at their stores, he announced Tuesday.

“I believe that these are the most logical locations to continue the distribution,” Layton said in a news release. “I also believe that the more gun locks we get out into the community, the safer our city will be.”

Additionally, every Marion County Sheriff’s deputy in a marked vehicle will have a supply of gun locks to distribute to anyone who wants one.

The sheriff wants to distribute them to all who ask, and if they run out, Layton said: “I’ll find more.”
