In 1891, Deputy Sheriff Charles Smith of Strafford County was wounded after being shot by a horse thief and later died from complications of the wound.  To honor the state’s first fallen officer, a section of New Hampshire highway may be renamed.  For more on this story, see Plan to rename road and return to comment.
