Authorities say five Detroit police officers responding to a 911 call at a vacant home on the city’s east side were met with heavy gunfire, killing one officer and wounding four others.

Police Chief Warren Evans said the officers and one suspect, who remains in custody, were taken to a hospital following the incident that happened about 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Evans said several shots were fired as officers approached the home. He said the slain officer, who has been on the job at least 12 years and has a 10-year-old son, was struck multiple times.

Four officers remain in temporary serious condition.

Evans and Mayor Dave Bing visited the slain officer’s widow at the hospital.

Police say a .45-caliber handgun and 1 pound of marijuana were recovered.
