An FBI agent testified today that he did not read Miranda rights to the 24-year-old Nigerian student who is accused of trying to blow up a Detroit-bound jetliner on Christmas Day 2009 because he was worried about other suicide bombers.

In a jury selection hearing, FBI Agent Timothy Waters testified that he questioned Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab at the hospital for about 50 minutes. The hearing will resume Thursday.

As he arrived in court today, Abdulmutallab was apparently in a foul mood.

“Osama’s alive,” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab shouted as he entered a courtroom in Detroit this morning. “I’m forced to wear prison clothes.”

Abdulmutallab, wearing khaki prison pants, a white T-shirt and black skull cap, refused to stand when U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds, who was in another room with prospective jurors, asked him to stand with others in her courtroom several floors away.

Sounds like they are dead set on letting this guy go. Do it, let him loose in the middle of the country, we’ll take care of him.
