A North Carolina manufacturer of assault-style rifles was interested in moving its operation to Palm Bay.

The company, I.O. Inc. of Monroe, N.C., planned to create more than 60 full-time jobs with an average annual wage of $43,000.

But instead of enthusiastically welcoming a potential new manufacturer to the area — and one willing make a nearly $1.2 million in capital investment — some local officials have been unwilling to make a full-fledged endorsement of the company’s relocation plans.

They wondered if offering tax incentives to lure I.O. to the area was such a good idea while the nation undertakes an emotional discussion on limiting the types of guns that the company manufactures. Two of the company’s more popular products are the “Hellhound Tactical” and “Sporter” semi-automatic rifles. The rifles come equipped with 30-round ammunition magazines.
