The haul, in Laredo on the US-Mexico border, included assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Police say it was one of the largest weapons shipments found in recent years. Two men have been arrested.

The seizure comes two weeks after Mexican President Felipe Calderon urged US lawmakers to help stem the flow of weapons to Mexico.

‘Tremendous blow’
Texas police say they acted on a tip-off and stopped a truck. Inside, they found 147 assault rifles, 53 bayonets and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition they believe were heading across the border to Mexico.

“This is one of the biggest cases we’ve ever seen here in this city,” Laredo police officer Alberto Escobedo told Reuters.

“It’s a tremendous blow to drug traffickers and organised crime.”

In a speech to Congress last month, President Calderon said 75,000 weapons had been seized in three years – and 80% of those that could be traced had come from the US.

President Obama has said that US demand for drugs has contributed to the violence in Mexico, and that the flow of guns from the US to Mexico must be stopped.

Drug-related violence in Mexico has left some 23,000 people dead since President Calderon came to office in December 2006 and launched a crackdown on drug gangs.

I want to hear ANY member of the U.S. Government stand and give me the correct description of an “Assault Weapon”. After I correct them on what constitutes an “Assault Weapon” (I know they will get it wrong), I want them to show me ANY FFL in this country who sells these weapons to the average John Q. Citizen. Can I get an AMEN?!

President Obama: The flow of illegals from Mexico to the US must be stopped 1st. Then we can address weapons form the US to Mexico. Why do we continue to let Mexico outsource their poverty & gangs to the US. For historical purposes, go back to when Castro sent his criminals to the Florida. What happened to the crime rate then?

Walter, walter, walter… You obviously have no idea on the issues on hand. By the way this apprehension was from a tip from JTTF and ICE. Locals were to pull vehicle over, but like usual locals always want to take all the credit.

How does one accumulate 147 “assault rifles”? Are they full auto? How long would it take for these two idiots to legally buy that many? Months? Who sold/lost them? Theres bigger issues here as to the source. If theres some legitimate dealer who is dirty, ATFE needs to nail them pronto. If they are illegal full autos coming from the US to mexico, they were illegaly sourced somplace else to begin with, and came INTO the US illegally, only doubling the importance of securing our borders!

This is what ICE should be doing but leave it to Texas law to outdo the Feds. We do it all the time. You’re welcome.

Could not agree more with Col Ingold, stop whats coming across their borders into the US and we will have plenty of time to stop the weapons from crossing into their country. It would be alot easier to stop guns if we did not have illeagals and drugs flooding over.

  • Good work…..NOW…in the last 8 months ICE reports 185,000 invaders (I.E. ILLEGAL ALIENS, ISLAMIC FASCISTS OF ALL KIND, AL QAEDO, HEZZBOLLAH, HAMAS, AL KUTZ, TAKE YOUR PICK) crossed over from Mexico into the USA in AZ alone. HOW ABOUT A LITTLE HELP FROM MEXICO IN STOPPING THEM?
