The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command has successfully used a vehicle-mounted high energy laser to shoot down drones and mortar rounds.

The testing of the High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD) took place between Nov. 18 and Dec. 10 at the High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility in White Sands Missile Range, N.M. It was the first time the HEL MD had been configured with a laser and beam director mounted in the vehicle.

The HEL MD can be utilized to protect against rockets, artillery, mortars, drones and cruise missiles.
