U.S. Rep Talks Civilian Life with Student-Veterans

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) met with student-veterans at UC Berkeley to discuss ways to ease their transition into civilian and campus life.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier, D-Calif., met with student-veterans at UC Berkeley on Monday to discuss ways to ease their transition into civilian and campus life.

The event, which was sponsored by the Cal Veterans Group, also covered ways to improve accessibility to higher education for veterans, as well as their job prospects after graduation.

“Once you leave the military, you’re on your own,” UC Berkeley senior and Cal Veterans Group Vice President Mike Drake said before the event. “Less than 20 percent of veterans are utilizing all the benefits available to them. Hopefully, this event will show vets that the situation is improving, that Congress is getting things done.”

Speier represents California’s 14th district, which includes areas like South San Francisco and San Mateo.
