Vermont State Police Director Thomas L’Esperance said Sunday that if the new armored vehicle saves just one life or prevents any injury, it will be worth it. They can be used for active shooting cases, serving high-risk arrest warrants or trying to get suspects to come out of barricaded buildings.

The bullet-proof vehicle also can be used to rescue injured or wounded persons without putting the lives of responding officers and others in jeopardy, L’Esperance said.

“It can also be used to defuse situations,” he said. Much like when police dogs arrive at scenes, the suspects will often rethink their positions, so do people seeing an armored personnel vehicle arriving, L’Esperance said.

The Vermont vehicle cost $255,398 with $189,400 coming from Homeland Security grants. Assets forfeited by convicted drug dealers were used to cover the remaining $65,998, L’Esperance said. The state took delivery in early September and began training with it about two weeks later.

Also, Kathryn, you say, “They are using OUR tax $$ to buy Military things to use on us..”. Does this mean you are a criminal? That would explain your post.

“They are using OUR $$ wether they say “Recieved from convicted drug dealers assetts or not! They are using OUR tax $$ to buy Military things to use on us.. Them + FEMA= Death of Innoncents in VT!! Dont we as american citizens have rights anymore? Becuz I thought thats what AMERICA is all about?? & Vermont more than anything is the laid back, calm, beautiful state that isnt full of trashy cities & Drugs, ect..” …Are you serious? Do you not watch the news? Vermont is getting worse in seriousness of crimes, whether you want to admit it or not. Maybe you could explain to me how the police obtaining helpful equipement to battle crime that AFFECTS INNOCENT CITIZENS is taking away our freedoms and rights? Sorry, I just do not see the connection there. Maybe we should just take your approach and be, “laid back, calm” and sit back to watch the drug dealers and criminals surround and influence our children. The world will be a great place then, won’t it?

Buying armored vehicles and equipping police forces like the military IS a social program. If you approve of this direction in militarization of the police, you would be happy in Nazi Germany or the USSR.This weaponry will be used against American civilians. But like i asked, are they molotov cocktail proof?

  • General Jim M

    Is it molotov cocktail proof?

  • VTGunner

You hsould hear all the negative comments this is getting in the local paper. “Blah blah blah this is a waste of money. We want more social programs and hand outs not a militaristic police force blah blah blah”

I swear I would move out of this state if it were for its extreme lack of gun laws.
