Women are still underrepresented in the highest positions in law enforcement across the world, but that is changing in the U.S.

Six major law enforcement institutions including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Secret Service, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Park Police, the FBI’s Washington Field Office and Amtrak Police Department are now run by women.

This year’s appointments of Julia Pierson as the director of the Secret Service and Valerie Parlave as the assistant director of the FBI’s Washington Field Office marked that first time that a woman had been appointed to those positions.
