Citizen-Involved Assaults
Threat and response patterns lessons you need to know!
I was recently asked to conduct a snubby class for a group of armed citizens. I agreed and after hanging up the phone it dawned on me that I’d never taught a class for CCW permit holders! I decided to look through what I had on hand to see if I could determine the type and location of the kind of assault the armed citizen (AC) was most likely to encounter and if there was an identifiable response pattern used by those citizens who successfully defended themselves in these circumstances. I intended to design a classroom discussion and a range session based on my findings. I had been given three hours for the program so I couldn’t afford to have any fat in what I was going to say and do.
To my surprise, I learned that the armed citizen was most likely to be attacked in their home, as opposed to on the street or in their vehicle. Their assailant, or VCA to use John Farnam’s term, was most likely to be a lone young male armed with a handgun. (Note: John recently told me that VCA stands for Violent Criminal Actor. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I’d always thought the “A” stood for something else.)
