Nuts and bolts handgun—simple, reliable and accurate!

I was once told by a professor that the phrase “nuts and bolts” means simplicity in both form and function. I really like this definition, as it is a perfect description of how I view my preparation for self-defense. I shun much of the “Tacti-Cool” stuff that I see in the magazines and that is taught in any number of the current generation of firearm training courses. Even though it is not the current trend, I am constantly looking for ways to simplify my individual response to danger more than ever. As I write this article, I am watching the news coverage of the shooting on the campus of Virginia Tech, which is the largest mass murder in our nation’s history. It further reminds me of how an attack can occur anytime, anyplace and that all citizens must be prepared to respond at a moment’s notice. The Hierarchy of Threat Management is Avoid, Evade and Counter, with countering the threat being the least desirable. However, if such a response becomes necessary, your actions must be simple, quick and effective, and your selected personal defense gear must also reflect this.

tuarus2.jpgWhile I am a big fan of the classic 1911 pistol, I admit that my daily carry gun reflects this self-imposed nuts and bolt standard. I prefer a gun that I can point and shoot without a lot of complexity, a gun that has a reasonable amount of ammo (handguns don’t have firepower, an AC-130 Spectre Gunship has firepower, pistols just have capacity) that can allow me to escape and evade a threat without having to perform the complex motor skill of a reload while moving, which, trust me, is what I would be doing! I think that we can all agree that simplicity, accuracy and reliability are necessary features in any defensive handgun and if you have a gun that fills these requirements, then you should stick with it and practice, practice, practice. However, if you have not found a personal carry gun that fits your individual needs, I have a gun that you might want to check out. The Taurus 24/7 PRO is a new pistol that offers a number of worthwhile features that deserve your consideration.

I to have puchaced a 24/7 pro in 9mm and love the it. exept for the hiene straight 8 sights call me a traditionalist or whatever but I like the 6 o clock sight picture. The main reason is simple, when you use the 6 o clock sighting you are able to see what you are shooting at with the straight 8 sighting you cover up the intinded target. Not to mention you should never have to change the way you instintively know how to shoot. If you ask me the guy who came up with this wasn’t a real shooter.

Not a lot of success getting information from TAURUS. “Maybe they problems (or complainers) will go away if we ignore them.” Any competent authority know if TAURUS has corrected the causes of broken parts in the 24/7 models?

  • Jim Whitaker Says:

In the past 2 years, I have had to 24/7 pro handguns. I was carrying the 4″ .40 caliber on duty, until the long slide came out. during qualification our department is using Winchester Ammunition. Duty wise its Hornandy. out of the last 3 qualification shoots and over 600 rounds shot, from various positions, different rates of fire, I have had 0 feeding or firing problems. (this goes for the regular 4 inch 24/7 and the long slide). Not to mention I have no problem holding a group tighter than most glock 35’s, and Sig sauers present on the line. I have 20 years in law enforcement here, shot a lot of weapons. I will trust my life to my Taurus… no problem.

  • Viejo Says:

Anyone have a review of the TAURUS 24/7 PRO 9mm compact pistol? Problems like the PT-911 model compact?

Always a naysayer in the group…

  • Dain Says:

Is anyone else suspicions of all the “I just purchased…” posts?? Ive seen manufactures flood forums and posts before, and this is looking suspicious!

  • David Says:

Well I was finally able to shoot my new Tuarus 24/7 Pro 9mm this week. I love it, it feeds and shoots like a champ. I put 150 rounds through it at the range, using 100 rounds of Magtech 9mm luger rounds(115 grain) and 50 rounds of 9mm USMC. The sights do take some time to get use to. At 25 feet I never missed the target and had clusterd targets not spread out. I did notice that at 36 feet I was missing the ehad shots to teh right about 2 - 6 inches. Maybe its becuase I am a new shooter and have not had much practice with a hand gun. If you are looking at getting teh 24/7 Pro its a great gun.

Out of the 150 rounds I had one casing fail to eject, but after cocking back the slide and releasing it the gun worked just fine again.

My gun Cost 384.00$ Has the stainles slide and 2 16+1 magazines.

I just bought a Taurus 24/7 Pro Compact in a 9mm and I love that gun! I was never a fan of Taurus, I carry a Kimber and HK USP .40 and Taurus never really came to mind. I watched several videos and read many reviews which made me want to try one out….so, I bought it and I have no regrets. Its smooth and accurate, no jams, pretty easy to clean, and just badarse. The heinie sights take a lil gettin use too, you need to put them directly on the target or you’ll shoot low. I highly recommend the 24/7, go buy it if you’re thinking about it.

  • David Says:

Hi guys, I just bought my Turuas 24/7 Pro 9mm. I am a first time gun owner and am going to be taking a saftey 1 on 1 class and then my CCDWL. I have yet to shoot my gun at the raange bc I just baught it and didnt have time after work. What do you all recommend for ammo. The dealer where I purchased the gun says use brass stay away from reloads and dull silver shells, what do you all think. Also is this gun a reliable gun, I see that many people have problems and others say it works flawless, what are the chances that I would get a bad gun?

  • Justin Porter Says:

I purchased a new 24/7 new in 02-08. I had shot around 200 rounds through, went home to clean it and the rod holding the springs together broke. I hope taurus will fix this problem, I know i’m not the only one it has happened too.

  • Pete Says:

I just recently purchased a Taurus 24/7 in 45 acp. On duty I carry a glock. But off duty I rather have my Taurus. I am not a fan of Taurus but this gun (24/7) in 45 acp is for real, a damn good gun.

  • C2thaC2thaW Says:

To Dennis G & Justin. First off, eff the Taurus haters. Those are the “supremist” Glock, Colt & etc owners. Taurus bought the Beretta plant in BR. Since then, then they have been producing quality products @ low prices, because they do not have union costs. (Note to retarted Colt, Glock, etc buyers who feel that if you don’t spend & at least $1000.00 on a pistol, you are a pussy[funny. I shoot you…you are dead. whether I shoot you with a $1000.00 or a $500.00 pistol]) Taurus is a great product. With any brand, you will find the haters & the lovers. Do not talk to friends, no matter how much you trust them…only talk to the gun dealers…and talk to more than one….so you don’t get a glock or colt “homer”.

  • Richie Swanson Says:

I purchased my 24/7 pro 40, 01-06-2008 and the handling is great the hinene sights was a bit getting use to but, after learning to sight with it I was hitting at 15 yards the bullseye 12 out of 15 time. I have a glock 9mm too. I like the way the 24/7 fits my hand I have a small hand and the ribed grib is great. I use 165gr. hollow point. out of 500 rounds i have neaver had a miss firer of a jam.

  • buckeye49 Says:

Well, yesterday I did it; I bought the PT 24/7 Pro Compact in 9mm, as I said I would (after buying the same gun in 40 S&W and loving it. I can’t wait to go to the range to try out this 9mm pistol. It feels identical to the 40 S&W version; and I loaded some expenseive hollow-point bullets and then some of my 124 grain re-loads in the mage and fed and ejcted them. Then I cleaned the gun and dry fired it a bit. I pray that this gun is as reliable and problem-free as the 40 S&W has been for me.

  • Greg Reilly Says:

bought my 24/7 9mm pro c In April ,2008 went to the range with it, out of 50 rounds I had 10 missfires, the ammunition was old but fired good in my other smith and wesson, so I bought some new Winchester and some Umc ammunition I had 1 missfire with the Winchester and none with the UMC has anybody else had the same prblem?

  • buckeye49 Says:

FOR Gary Robinson: Gary, I have the Heinie sights and I think you are probably shooting/airming according to the way alot (for instance the Springfiled Armory XD pistol manual says), e.g. you are likely using was is called the 6 o’clock sight picture, meaning you place the target just on TOP of your sights (regular 3-dot sights when all 3 dots are in alighment). Personally, I don’t like the 6 O’clock sight picture using ANY brand of pistol sights, I prefer the POA picture. With the Heinie sights, the 6 O’clock sight picture will cause you to shoot low. When looking at the Hieine Sight on the 24/7 pistol, you need to make sure that the front sight white dot sits exactly on top of and in perfect vertical alignment with the rear sight and, you need to then make sure that the front dot sigtht is exactly covering the targe you want to hit (e.g. bullseye). When you start aiming this way, your shots will come up an inch or so and you will be hitting dead-on. Then you will start putting your buddy’s shooting to shame!

  • Dan Says:

any one know of any optic sights for this gun i am finding it is hard to find accessories also what do you guys recommend for a good holster to ccw??

  • asad Says:

i bought my taurus 24/7 pro 9mm on 8-5-2008. fired about 20 rounds and shot my target of empty bottles from a distance of 42 yards.God i liked it but 1 thing disturbs me and that is in the middle of shooting 1 of the rounds just didnt go off and i had to eject it and load it again to fire. hope its not a big issue.

  • Dennis G Says:

A couple years ago I traded in a Ruger P94 Special Edition for a better carry option–by better I mean smaller. I got a Walther PPK/S in .380. Ever since I’ve been itching to pick up another .40, if for no other reason than to use up the 400 rounds of ammo I had left over from the Ruger, but I definitely had a budget. So after looking around for a while and finally holding a 24/7, I finally understand why so many people talk about how comfortable this pistol is. I was also shocked at the $359.00 price for a Pro Compact in .40–only just over half the price of the Glock 23 next to it in the case. Admittedly it was a bit of an impulse, but, “sold.”

After I got home, I Googled and Yahooed the gun for a few hours. That uncovered a number of sites and posts with reports of nosedives, failures to eject, and generally miserable issues with Taurus customer service. The trend seemed to be more common with the .45’s, but there were a few who reported problems with the .40. Of course, some of these reports went back a year or two, so I’m curious if anyone knows if the 24/7 is in a 2nd or 3rd generation by now, has Taurus acknowledged any feed issues, and if so, have they made definitive changes to the 24/7 line to address them?

After reading the various negative reviews, I had a huge case of buyer’s remorse, although I feel better seeing the positive remarks here, and some others I’ve found on the 24/7 and Taurus in general, though as Dustin noted, the proof is indeed in the pudding, so I’m hoping for a clean initial run this weekend at the range.

I had a flashback to several years ago, when in college and looking for a cheap option, I picked up a Jennings .22 semi-auto at a gun show for maybe a hundred bucks. It was awful…so bad in fact that I couldn’t even bring myself to trade it in, so I threw the frame in a river, the slide in the Atlantic, and the mag in the trash. I’ll trade the Taurus if it doesn’t work out, but I’m hoping it will.

I purchased a new Taurus PT 24/7 Pro Compact in 40 S&W on 4-30-08. I took it to the range to shoot steel plates this past Sunday afternoon (5-4-08) and put four (4) Winchester 180 grain hollowpoint self-defense rounds through it (I wanted to make sure those hollowpoints will work before I relied on it for self-defense). Then I fired 250 rounds of my reloads, (165 grain Berry’s Mfg.flat nose bullets)through the pistol. I used Winchester 231 powder and load on a Dillion RL 550B press. I was so, so happy to experience “0″, not one FTE or FTF. The gun ate up my reloads and I had no negatie issues whatsoever. I was leary, since I had just traded my Sprinfield XD 40 S&W 3″ subcompact pistol even for the 24/7 pistol (yes I actually did, even though there was quite a price difference). I love this 24/7 compact in 40 S&W. I am now going to buy one in 9mm for my wife to shoot.

  • z-man Says:

I just purchased the 24/7 9mm. I am very impressed with the simplicity of the gun. I only shot 50 round through it, but felt very comfortable in my hand. The trigger is a little different than I am used to, but I like the easy pull. I also noticed the diffence in the sights, so I got the hang of it by the end of the box of ammo. Great weapon for the price.

  • BBQ Tony Says:

Hey Guys, I just bought my first new handgun a Taurus 24/7 Pro from Shooters in Jax.,FL. I pick it up Saturday (cant get here quick enough) the over and under white dots your refering to as Heinie sites, are they used for plate shooting? Any sugestions guys?

  • Chris M Says:

I purchased my Taurus 24/7 pro 9mm brand new about a month and a half ago. I’ve only had a chance to put 200 rounds through it. I noticed the end of the captive recoil spring assembly rod just below the barrel had snapped off. I disassembled it to see how bad the damage was, and the springs shot across the room. It’s beyond my rapair. I take extreme care and caution when it comes to my firearms so this incident completly baffles me. The rod is made of polymer also, just like the grip which seems kind of dumb (the rod I mean). I’m currently deciding what to do with it. Other than this crappy incident, it fired very well and the grip is beyond perfect. I’m a lefty so I usually have shells flying in my face but the taurus eliminates this problem.

  • Vic Says:

I also bought a 24/7 Pro in 9mm. This gun is a one fine weapon I carry it everyday I have over 5000 rounds through it and it has preformed flawlessly. Yes the sights are a little hard to get use too but Heinie does make a 3 dot version with or without nightsights for about 120$.

  • MPanova Says:

I am not surprised that a dealer would tell you this, let me guess he wants you to buy something a bit more expansive right? Taurus does not have much mark up so dealers dont make as much money on them as say a Glock or Smith or the higher end H&K or Sig. Find someone like myself who owns the 24/7Pro and have them let you shoot it and you will then go out and buy one for yourself, trust me. I have 3 24/7’s 2 in 45acp and one 9mm. One of my 45’s has just over 10,000 rounds through it now and its been perfect, I carry the other 45 daily and it has been awsome through well over 1000 rounds of various HP’s.

  • Dustin Says:

I own a 24/7 PRO .45 and i have heard from alot of gun shop owners that Taurus is bad and cheap well the proof is in pudding. I love mine and am glade i picked it over the XD or CZ i was going to get. Mine has had NO problems, shoots great, grip is awesome and with a 12 round mag plus 1 it has a good capacity. alot of the gun shop owners you hear from are probably trying to take your eyes off a great $400 Taurus and fix them on a $1200 SIG. i dont compare a Taurus to a Sig but for $300-$500 they fit the bill. I truly do prefer my 24/7 over my friends XD.45 and Glock 22. As for the strait 8’s i will put a hole dead center in a target at 30 yards but they do take a little getting used to.

  • Mike Coleman Says:

I am looking to buy my wife a hand gun. I am impressed with the features and benefits of the 24/7 PRO 9mm, but two different dealers have told me to stay away from Taurus autos. They say they have had to send a number of them in for repair due to broken firing pins and so forth. Has anybody else had any problems. I like the gun!

    Mike C.

  • Dave Spaulding Says:

Wil…the gun I tested was the 9mm version. The photos in the article were done in a photo studio and not the same gun that I tested.

Gary…What Chris has told you is correct. Heinie sights are a quick action combat sight and not a competition sight. Thus, the sights are designed to cover the area that you are shooting at. Since the Heinie sight is a bit “tall” above the bore line on the 24/7 there will be a bit of off-set from the start. If you are trying for a six o’clock hold, it would not surprsie me a bit that you are shooting low. Try this…start at seven yards using a eight inch circle and hold the dot on the Heinie sight about where the logo would be on wrist watch (the upper third) and see if that does not solve your problem.

    I hope this helps,

    Dave S.

  • wil Says:

Can you clarify if you tested a 9mm or the 45 that is in all of the photos in the mag. the reason why I am asking is because this is a choice I am trying to make and your article was supposed to inform me. Thanks Wil

  • Chris Says:

The Heine sights are designed so that the front sight obscures your intended target. It may seem more natural to aim at the “6 o-clock” position of your target like with regular sights, but these Heine sights are different. Even if this wasn’t normal for these sights…if the gun is consistently hitting low…aim higher!

  • gary robinson Says:

please tell me why the taurus 24/7 pro with hiene and straight 8 sights consistently shoots very low ? I have tried everything I can think of to aim this sight. The results are always the same, shoots too low, any where from 6 to 12 inches low. Have tried making the snowman with dots and anything else I could think of. Iam so disappointed. My friend wanted me to buy a ruger, I bought the 24/7 pro and his gun makes mine look bad when we shoot targets . Please help me.
