The name Forjas Taurus S.A., from Brazil, has traditionally been associated with a wide range of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols whose presence in the U.S. market is well known. Since 1980, the company has also been involved in the manufacture of submachine guns, initially with a somewhat improved version of the 9×19mm Beretta M12, and in the last few years with the .40 S&W MT 40, a derivative of the Chilean FAMAE submachine gun.
Early in 2010, however, Taurus decided to go ahead with an in-house concept of a multi-caliber platform for long guns, employing modern, polymer-type production techniques and advanced ergonomics. This is being applied to a family of guns that includes a semi-auto 9×19mm/.40 S&W carbine for the U.S. market, select-fire 5.56×45mm carbines/rifles, and a 9×19 mm/.40 S&W submachine gun.
