There are few things more maneuverable on today’s battlefield than a LAV (Light Armored Vehicle). It can run at highway speeds on and off road, swim rivers and seek out enemy targets at ranges rarely achieved by comparable weapon systems.
Leading up to the Iraq War in 2003, Marine Corps LAV units began receiving shipments of the Barrett Model 82A3 special applications scoped rifle, or SASR. In light of its many applications since Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the Marines had already decided that the Barrett would remain a useful tool for decades to come. With LAV units, the battle lines advanced much faster than conventional combat or support elements could keep up. A long, powerful arm was needed for the LAV to take the battle to the enemy.
