UNLIKE OTHER PROFESSIONS, law enforcement is confrontational in nature.
Police officers do not go out of their way to instigate conflict, but they are often the “bearers of bad news”. Responses range from complaints to verbal abuse to violence.

Like it or not, policing is also an intimate business. Rendering first aid, conducting sobriety checks, pat downs for weapons and all aspects of subject control require the officer to invade another’s personal space. Obviously, proximity to a subject increases risk.
