Gates: Terrorism, irregular warfare is top military priority for decades to come

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates says we’re in for the long haul, as his new National Defense Strategy explained that winning the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan will not end the “Long War” against violent extremism that all too often turns to methods of terrorism.  In effort to protect the U.S. from violence brought on by extremists in the future, the nation’s top military priority over the coming decades will focus on preventing terrorism.  The document also outlines the necessity for the military to master “irregular” warfare.
