World’s biggest weapons makers opt out of cluster bomb treaty

Associated Press, MSNBC

DUBLIN, Ireland - Diplomats from 111 nations formally adopted a landmark treaty that will ban cluster bombs on Friday after U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged every nation to sign the negotiated pact “without delay.”  The pact, set to take effect mid-2009, requires signatories not to use cluster bombs, to destroy existing stockpiles within eight years and to fund programs that will clear old battlefields of dud bombs.

The talks did not involve the biggest makers and users of cluster bombs: the United States, Russia, China, Israel, India and Pakistan.  For more details on this, click here and return back to comment.
