Deep down into the bowels of the earth goes a small 82nd airborne unit on a big mission!
“Hey Ratso, get your squatty body over here. I got a mission you’re just gonna love and you’re just the man for it,” were the First Sergeant’s endearing words of salutation and summoning.
Your battalion has been operating in the Sarkani Valley of Afghanistan for two weeks and has come across extensive tribal rain and ground water preservation constructs known as “Karezs,” that are also serving as combat complexes for the Taliban and as weapons caches. Like rat holes and rabbit warrens, they are difficult to access and despite some technology augmentation, it has once again come down to the lightly armed “grunt,” like the “Tunnel Rats” of Vietnam to completely search and clear such underground fortresses.
