Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50mm PMII — tough enough to be selected by USMC!

With a 50 millimeter objective lens, the Schmidt & Bender 3-12×50 PMII performs better in low light than would an identical scope with a lens of a smaller diameter.

To make a reliable weapon for a sniper, it is essential that the rifle be equipped with a scope that will hold zero and not fail at the critical moment of that life-or-death shot. Not all scopes have the quality and features to make them suitable for such service, but one that does is the Schmidt & Bender 3-12×50mm PMII.

Schmidt & Bender actually offers three models of the scope—two commercial versions designated the 3-12×50mm PMII and 3-12×50mm PMII LP, and another called the 3-12×50mm PMII Military. The latter is almost identical to the military M8541 except for commercial instead of military markings and the reticle, which is the excellent P4F Fine instead of the Generation 2 mil-dot reticle. The construction and glass are the same.

The 3-12×50 PMII is at home on an AR-style rifle like this Sig516. The mount is a LaRue Tactical LT-111, which holds zero when removed and replaced.

Quality, not quantity, has always been the focus of Germany’s Schmidt & Bender, which began operations in 1957. That focus has led to a reputation for making some of the highest quality and most rugged, riflescopes in the world. And the 3-12×50 PMII must be rugged, because according to Schmidt & Bender, it is the only scope that survived a battery of rigorous tests that the United States Marine Corp devised. Consequently, the Marines chose the Schmidt & Bender 3-12×50mm as the M8541 Scout Sniper Day Scope. If it can survive whatever tests the Marines concocted, it will most likely also survive the challenges of the police sniper.
