USMC MV-22 Osprey

It’s an airplane, it’s a helicopter, it’s both and more!

The V-22 Osprey is a remarkable new kind of aircraft. It is neither a standard fixed-wing airplane nor a helicopter. However, it can operate like both, taking off and landing vertically like a helicopter and changing its configuration in flight to fly forward at twice the speed of the fastest helicopter. It has had a long and difficult development program and would not have gone into production without the steadfast support of the United States Marine Corps.

osprey2.gifThe USMC is a large and powerful fighting force with 220,000 marines organized into three marine divisions and three marine air wings. It has more soldiers than the British Army and more combat aircrafts than the RAF. While the marines have carried out only conventional combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, their main mission remains amphibious assaults, the seizure of beachheads on hostile shores.
