The definition of “backcountry hunting” is somewhat elusive. Many would envision a multi-day trek into the wilderness, carrying all of the essential overnight camp gear in their pack. Even though I’ve spent weeks in remote regions participating in such adventures, most of my hunting is conducted within a half-day’s hike back to my truck. Obviously, since you’ll have to carry everything necessary for responsible game care, your choice of edged tools is important.
When you hunt on your feet, every ounce countsincluding your knife. In my experience, most hunters carry more edge than they need. Every ounce, beyond the very essential, can add weight that will wear you down as the miles pile up. Certainly, ABS Mastersmith Rick Dunkerley knows the importance of lightweight gear. Not only is Rick a knifemaker, but he’s also a licensed Montana hunting guide with more than two dozen years of experience in that state’s wilderness areas.
Mastersmith Status
Rick began making knives in 1984. He has been a full-time maker since 1996 and he received his American Bladesmith Society (ABS) Mastersmith rating in 1997. In 2002, Rick was selected to be on the board of directors for that organization. In addition to all of this, Rick has garnered numerous awards for many of his one-of-a-kind cutlery creations. And he is a much sought after instructor of Damascus forging. However, he has never strayed far from his interest in big game hunting.
Named for Montana’s Bob Marshall Wilderness, where Rick Dunkerley spends much of his time during the fall guiding big game hunters, the Bob Fixed Blade features a blade crafted from 52100 carbon steel. In addition, Micarta handle scales (available in black or orange) are securely affixed to the full-length hidden tang.
