The relationship between SOG Knives and R. Lee “Gunny” Ermey is into its second year now, and with such a firm bond, it was just a matter of time before the two would pair up for a knife collaboration. Well now it’s here, and from the looks of the limited edition set, fans of the storied ‘drill sergeant’ will be delighted.
Gunny was born Ronald Lee Ermey in Emporia, Kansas in 1944, during the latter stages of World War II. He enlisted in the Marine Corps at an early age in 1961 and served as a drill instructor from 1965-1967. In 1968 Gunny was sent to Viet Nam where he served 14 months with Marine Wing Support Group 17. From there he served two tours of duty in Okinawa, Japan, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1972 he received a medical discharge for injuries over the course of duty.
Each Gunny knife comes in a separate display case that also houses a commemorative medal and knife sheath. A certificate of authenticity is also included with each knife. STEVE WOODS PHOTO
Ermey is most famous in recent years for his hosting roles on the History Channel’s Mail Call and Lock N’ Load series and contemporary films such as the Toy Story movies—not to mention his hilarious portrayal of a cantankerous shrink in the Geico commercials. His breakout movie role was in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film Full Metal Jacket and he has appeared in several blockbuster movies such as Apocalypse Now, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Mississippi Burning, and Dead Man Walking.
Note the folder’s VG-10 re-curved clip point blade. Slicing and shaving wood proved to be a piece of cake for the smaller folding Gunny.

I just purchased a SOG “Trident” and have several “tac” knives as well. I just wanted your opinion on this particular weapon and do you have a favorite, SOG or otherwise? If you have the time I would appreciate your opinion on a PDF pistol. I’m a firm believer in the Mossberg for home defense, but it has it’s drawbacks with a ccw, namely the concealed issue. I have several Glocks and an xd45acp. If you would be so kind as to elaborate on the new HK45,although pricey, or the newer sig?
