The REAL DEAL from those who lived to tell it!

March 2008: A man pulled beside two deputies and revved his engine before speeding away, shortly after 2 a.m. The Sullivan Co., TN Sheriff deputy facing the road went after the truck. The other deputy began to pull out in support when a car sped by along the same road.

The four vehicles continued down the dark road when they split in different directions. The man in the truck ran into a dead end and stopped. The deputy got out and instructed the driver to exit his truck.

As the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated, trying to run over the deputy. The deputy was struck twice before drawing his gun and firing two shots through the windshield—killing the driver with a gunshot wound to the head. Later, Sherriff Fred Newman, head of the department stated, “There are about 1,000 things running through your head at a time like that. He’s out there by himself. He doesn’t know how many people are in the car, and then the suspect doesn’t comply… It is a very emotional situation.”

The suspect in the other vehicle was stopped and arrested for outstanding warrants.
