Deadly Force Sight Systems

Gunsite drills home the benefits of sights and lasers for LE’s darkest, meanest streets.

gunsite.gifWe owe it to ourselves to gain every advantage possible through training and equipment when carrying a loaded firearm. When deadly force is needed, it is the responsibility of that person to quickly identify the target(s) and to make sure every shot hits the intended mark.

Traveling 20 miles north of Prescott, AZ, I visited Gunsite for the first time. My purpose was to test Crimson Trace Laser Grips and XS Sights on the S&W M&P in daylight and in lowlight scenarios. Because my department never issued such products, I’ve long wondered what advantage these sight systems could provide and how they could assist me in carrying out my law enforcement duties.

Each sight system was utilized in shooting drills that were orchestrated by instructors William Murphy from the SureFire Institute, Giles Stock from Gunsite, and Wes Doss from Crimson Trace. During the classroom portion of training, I had my first experience with the Crimson Trace laser grips and the XS sights. With firearms provided by Smith & Wesson (an M&P 9mm and an M&P 360 .357 Magnum revolver), I quickly learned how easy it was to install and dial in the Crimson Trace laser grips. I was impressed with the fact that the internal components of the grips were low profile and did not add any noticeable weight on either firearm. Utilizing a Blackhawk Serpa holster for both firearms, I was still able to make a quick and smooth draw.
