  WASHINGTON, March 5, 2008 – The numbers of U.S. special operations forces are expected to grow in the years ahead as the United States continues its fight against global terrorism, a senior U.S. military officer told a Senate panel here yesterday. • Elite Special Operations Command steps back from counterterrorism role

  WASHINGTON — The military’s elite Special Operations Command has removed itself from a controversial plan that would have given it the authority to carry out secret counterterrorism missions around the world.   The presence of specially trained green beret forces throughout the world is diminishing, as the demand for more elite warriors in Iraq keeps them from fulfilling roles in other countries. Although the overall American force in Iraq has been shrinking, the number of special operators in the war zone is likely to increase, said Adm. Eric T.
