Passing The Torch
Weapons and training from the U.S. allow Afghan and Iraqi defense teams to protect and serve their new democracy!
“Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of American—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage…”
These words from President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address now echo in the message from leaders in Iraq and Afghanistan: Lasting success in Iraq and Afghanistan will be largely graded on the effectiveness of each government’s security responsibilities to their citizens. American troops and private contractors are working hard to provide each nation with the appropriate training and experience so that each country may evolve into a sovereign nation, capable of protecting their citizens from foes foreign and domestic. In creating the military and police forces necessary to make this possible, Smith & Wesson has been given the historic task of providing each country’s sidearm.
Frontline: Afghanistan
“The [combined] operations work much better now than they did in the past,” says U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Darrin Yuhn, part of an embedded training team to the 203rd Kandak, an Afghan National Army unit that’s similar in size to an American battalion. “The Afghan forces are a lot more involved with the planning of operations,” he adds.
