The one thing about Columbia River Knife & Tool Company (CRKT) is that they keep coming up with new ideas all the time. And I don’t mean just glossy stuff. They are constantly consulting with outside makers and translating those creative and innovative designs into the CRKT production knife line. Likewise, they also get right into the core of their products by seeking out new steels that combine outstanding performance with affordability.
One of the newest steels CRKT has been working with is 9Cr18. This is a high-carbon stainless steel that mirror finishes nicely without the orange peel appearance of comparable steels. Furthermore, the steel has a Rockwell hardness range of 56-58, which means that it can be easily sharpened by hand in the field. And that’s an advantage many hunters value over long-term edge retention.
