“Man dies in unexplained attack on police” was the typical headline in the old days. Some guy would open fire on officers, or wave an empty gun at them, or rush at them with a knife. The cops would, of course, do what they were trained to do. After it was over, people would come forward to say that the man who attacked without provocation had been acting increasingly despondent, perhaps even had been talking about doing away with himself.
